Open Heart Kitchen Recap

Happy December Blue Devils! On Friday, December first, Amador Valley Key Club met at the Ridgeview Commons Senior Center to participate in volunteering for Open Heart Kitchen. Open Heart Kitchen is a non-profit organization that provides meals for people and families in need throughout the Tri-Valley. Being my first time volunteering at a senior center and working in a kitchen, it was a heart-warming and rewarding experience. Our club of eight people was split up into groups, each sent to perform different activities to help the seniors-- serving food, cleaning dishes, mopping the floors-- plenty of activities to keep each person busy. I was put into the task of plating food. I was so surprised how time never seemed to slow in this place-- there was never one second where I or anyone else was left with nothing to do. It really made me think how non-profits such as this have so much man-power behind the scenes which are never truly thought about in the public view. For example, Beckie, the woman in charge of training and looking after the volunteers, was always busy but never used that as an excuse to prepare a meal less than restaurant-quality. Her constant enthusiasm and concern over the seniors was truly inspiring to see and makes me wonder how I can improve myself to be as selfless and amazing as she is. Even though our time volunteering at OHK was short, it truly made an impact on not only myself but the rest of our club as well and I hope we will be able to help out again!
